A railway built by 60,000 prisoners, retold on the bridge after dark
Each year in late November, Kanchanaburi Province runs River Kwai Bridge Week together with the Red Cross Fair, on the bridge itself and the provincial grounds beside it. The bridge belongs to the Second World War Thai–Burma Railway, the Death Railway, and ordinary passenger trains still cross it.
To open a railway from Thailand into Burma, the Japanese army forced more than 60,000 Allied prisoners of war, from Britain, Australia, the Netherlands, the United States and elsewhere, to build it in 1942 and 1943, along with an even larger number of Asian labourers: Chinese, Malay, Javanese and Burmese. Tens of thousands died of disease, starvation and exhaustion.
After dark, a light-and-sound show uses lighting, sound effects and fireworks to retell that history on the bridge. It does not run every night without fail. On two nights in early December 2025 the show was cancelled because its steam locomotive was needed for a royal duty, and an outdoor khon performance and the folk tale Sang Thong took its place.

Details
The show starts after dark, so getting back to Bangkok afterwards runs late into the night and an overnight stay in Kanchanaburi works better. The 2026 dates and show times are still to be confirmed by the province.
What the show is about
The 2025 show was titled The Light of Royal Grace Shines Over the River Kwai. It used lighting, sound and fireworks on the bridge to tell the story of the Thai–Burma Railway, and the short fireworks display at the end was dedicated to the memory of the late Queen Sirikit.
How the dates are set
The full name is River Kwai Bridge Week and Red Cross Fair. Kanchanaburi Province fixes the dates each year, and they have fallen between late November and early December, with 27 November to 7 December in 2025. The 2026 dates listed by TAT are provisional until the province confirms them.
Getting there from Bangkok
By bus: first-class buses leave Bangkok Southern Bus Terminal about every 15 minutes from 05:00 to 22:30. The ride takes about two hours and costs 110 baht.
By train: two ordinary trains a day leave Thonburi station and run through Kanchanaburi and over the bridge to Nam Tok. They are slower than the bus but cross the bridge itself.
Show times and the trip back
The show starts after dark, and a two-hour ride back to Bangkok afterwards runs late into the night, so an overnight stay in Kanchanaburi is more practical. The subject is the prisoners and labourers who died building the railway, told with fireworks and loud sound effects. It suits people who want to understand that history more than anyone looking for a party.
Where to stay
The show is staged on the bridge and the provincial grounds beside it. From a hotel near the bridge you can walk back afterwards without looking for transport. Room rates may be higher than usual during the event.
Entry and the 2025 schedule
In 2025 the show was free, nightly at 19:00 for about 40 minutes, with an extra 20:30 show on Saturdays. TAT's 2022 notice had doors opening at 18:30. Times and any charges for 2026 will come from Kanchanaburi Province or TAT.
Otherwise, the main costs are transport and a room.
At the war cemetery
Most of the people buried at Kanchanaburi War Cemetery were prisoners who died building the railway, and it is still a war cemetery in active care. Keep your voice down, stay off the grass in front of the headstones and skip posed photos.
The history behind the bridge
During the Second World War the Japanese army forced more than 60,000 Allied prisoners of war, along with an even larger number of Asian labourers, to build a strategic railway through Thailand into Burma in 1942 and 1943. According to the CWGC, about 13,000 prisoners died and were buried along the line, and far more Asian labourers died.
Daytime visits nearby
Kanchanaburi War Cemetery and the Thailand–Burma Railway Centre next to it are both in town. Visit them during the day and return to the bridge in the evening for the show.
Further north-west in Sai Yok district, the Australian Government's Hellfire Pass Interpretive Centre is open daily from 09:00 to 16:00 but closes every year on 5 December (National Day), 24–27 December and 31 December. 5 December falls inside the Bridge Week window, so pick another day. Day tours may skip Hellfire Pass when the trail is affected by weather, so check the tour page before you go.
